The Astronaut is “Between Eden”: This was the first of a series of that was done on this scale. I spent 2 weeks making the 11 x 11″ drawing. I then printed it out to 42 x 42″. Then I redrew the drawing at full size with all the details. With the advice of the owner at Hale Art Space, I kept the painting and all the other paintings in this show with minimal colors. I named the show Oddities and Entities Show. From this painting, I realized that minimal colors works with my style of painting and I use it often in my work. For this painting, I use red and black. In other paintings, I have added yellow to the red and black. I sparingly add other colors to my art.
I wanted to make the painting merge with a classical and modern theme. I wanted the astronaut to be the main subject. I filled the astronauts facemask with subtleties of flowers, giving it the impression that the suit is filled with flowers. I wanted the astronauts pose to be in archway of flowers, leaves and unusual foliage around the astronaut to represent the “Garden of Eden”. The snake also ornaments the archway. Adam and Eve flank the astronaut. Surrounding the archway is my version of hell. Monsters, human skulls transforming to monstrous creatures skulls. A Mummy has the stomach of a screaming mouth and other monsters adorn the painting. I have placed white as the environment of the astronaut to counter the beige of everything else in the painting and give it a heaven like appearance. This painting took many months to complete and sets the theme to the gallery show.
