Red Queen is a painting I made for a children’s book entitled, “Adventures of Blimpboy”. I wanted to have a yin and yang character for the book. Blimpboy is always the good guy. He takes an adventure across the land of dread, where the evil Red Queen reins over the land and it’s people. Blimpboy tries to right the wrong that influenced the land for a great deal of time.
Red Queen is a rabbit in the animal kingdom and rules the land with an iron fist. She get evil advice from an ancient snake called whither, her trusted advisor and confidant. Other than him, all the other animals fall in line. I felt it would be more interesting to have the evil rabbit queen with a extraordinary huge head and small body giving her the appearance of being spoiled, with a nasty disposition. It may have been inspired by the Disney Alice in Wonderland movies. This is a period piece where the clothing and environment has an old Renaissance feel to it. The large red curtain gives the piece a sort of a property boundary, even though, the property is still nature. I used subtle dark colors to seem or subdued and depressing. The main colors in this art piece is red to show that the Red Queen castle is mainly red.
The Red Queen has captured Flower Girl, Blimpboy’s girlfriend. Flower Girl is locked away in a prisoneer in a cell in the basement of the castle. Blimpboy travels from a far away land to rescue her. He comes across many characters in his trek and makes many friends.
